Hayes Plumbing serves commercial properties across the Municipality of Clarington, from Courtice next to Oshawa to Newcastle in the east, Orono to the north and the hamlets and farms in between. Our shop at 448 Ritson Rd. South in Oshawa is about 15 to 35 minutes from Clarington addresses, our plumbers are licensed and WSIB certified, and a live operator answers (905) 576-3043 24/7 for plumbing emergencies.
Clarington is more than Bowmanville
The Municipality of Clarington covers about 612 square kilometres. It has four urban areas, Courtice, Bowmanville, Newcastle and Orono, and a rural area within the Greenbelt and Oak Ridges Moraine with thirteen hamlets surrounded by farmland. Growth is focused in the serviced urban communities of Bowmanville, Courtice and Newcastle. From our Oshawa shop, Courtice is about 10 to 15 minutes away, Bowmanville 15 to 25 and Newcastle 25 to 35.
That spread matters for commercial plumbing, because the water source, the sewer connection and the approvals a business deals with can change from one part of the municipality to another.
Water and wastewater differ across the municipality
The Region of Durham has Lake Ontario water supply plants in Bowmanville and Newcastle, and it lists the hardness of its lake-based system at 125 mg/L as calcium carbonate. Orono is different: it is on one of the Region's groundwater well systems, with a listed hardness of 309 mg/L. Health Canada notes that hard water causes scaling of hot water pipes and water heating appliances, so it is worth factoring in when an Orono business chooses and maintains a water heater.
Outside the serviced areas, many rural properties rely on private wells and septic systems. The Durham Region Health Department approves the design and building of septic systems in Clarington. It also enforces Ontario's Small Drinking Water Systems regulation (O. Reg. 319/08) for public facilities such as restaurants, motels, gas stations and community centres that are not on municipal water and where the public has access to water. Owners of those systems must register with the Health Department and with a licensed laboratory for water testing, and the Durham Health Connection Line (905-668-2020) can tell you whether your system qualifies.
Backflow prevention for Clarington businesses
The Region of Durham's Backflow Prevention By-law (No. 24-2018) applies to industrial, commercial, institutional and multi-residential properties (more than six units) that are supplied with Regional water and classed as severe or moderate hazards under CSA B64. Owners must install a premise isolation backflow preventer, usually just downstream of the Region's water meter, and have a cross connection survey completed every five years and after a change of ownership, tenant, zoning, use or chemical use.
Each device must be tested and maintained every year by an authorized tester registered with the Region, and test reports go to both the Region and the Municipality of Clarington within 28 days of the test. Hayes provides backflow preventer installation, repair and annual testing with certified testers, along with the documentation your municipality requires. Backflow devices inside the building beyond premise isolation fall to the local building department, which in Clarington is the Municipality's Building Division.
Commercial plumbing services across Clarington
For businesses in Courtice, Bowmanville, Newcastle, Orono and the rural area, we handle emergency calls, drain clearing, leak detection and repair, toilets, faucets and sinks, shut-off valves and pressure reducing valves, electric water heaters, riser replacements in apartment and condominium buildings, restaurant service and kitchen renovations, and washroom renovations, including accessible washrooms. Planned work is scoped after a site visit and scheduled to limit disruption to staff, tenants and customers.
Clarington has also planned employment lands along Highway 401, including the Clarington Energy Business Park south of the 401 between Courtice Road and Solina Road, next to the Darlington nuclear plant. Plumbing permits for new buildings and alterations anywhere in the municipality come from the Municipality of Clarington through the Service Clarington portal, not from the Region.
