What is water heater service?

Water heater service covers repair and replacement of tank-style hot water heaters, both gas and electric, including power-vent units. Most tanks last 8 to 12 years, and Durham Region hard water shortens that unless sediment is flushed. Hayes Plumbing repairs electric water heaters and installs replacement tanks across Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering and Clarington, with written quotes before any work begins.

What this service includes

  • Gas and electric hot water tank replacement
  • Power-vent water heater installation
  • Electric water heater repair
  • Thermostat, element and valve replacement
  • Sediment flushing and maintenance
  • Expansion tanks and code upgrades
  • Tankless conversions

Signs you need water heater service

If you notice any of these, it is time to call a licensed plumber.

Call (905) 576-3043
  1. No hot water, or hot water that runs out quickly.
  2. Water pooling around the base of the tank.
  3. Rusty or discoloured hot water.
  4. Popping or rumbling sounds from sediment in the tank.
  5. The tank is 10 years old or more.
  6. The pilot light or element keeps failing.

Our water heater service process

  1. Diagnose

We check the tank, the controls, the venting and the water quality to find the actual problem.

  2. Repair or replace

Elements, thermostats and valves can be repaired. A leaking tank cannot. We explain both paths with prices in writing.

  3. Install

The new tank is installed to code with proper venting, relief valve and drain, and the old unit is removed.

  4. Test and hand over

We confirm temperature and operation and explain the maintenance that will extend its life.

Water Heater Service FAQs

Common questions about water heater service in Oshawa and Durham Region.

A standard tank typically lasts 8 to 12 years. Hard water and skipped flushing shorten that, and a tank that is leaking from the body needs replacement rather than repair.

Elements, thermostats, relief valves and gas controls can be repaired. If the tank itself is leaking or the unit is more than about 10 years old and needs a costly part, replacement usually makes more sense.

Not on the same visit. Under Ontario's rules for in-home sales, a business you call for a repair or maintenance can leave you information about a new water heater, but cannot sign a contract for one on that visit. If you want a replacement, call us to book it: we quote it in writing and schedule the installation with you.

About $1,200 to $3,500 installed for a standard tank and $1,800 to $3,800 for a power-vent unit, per our 2026 hot water tank replacement guide.

Yes. See our tankless water heater page for sizing, venting and cost details.

Not a gas one. Ontario law requires gas work, including connecting a gas water heater, to be done by a TSSA-registered contractor using TSSA-certified gas technicians. An electric tank still involves the water connections, the temperature and pressure relief valve and its discharge line, and the electrical connection, so check with your municipality's building department about permits first. If your tank is a rental, the rental company owns it: check your agreement before replacing it.
