What is sewer & drain camera inspection?

A sewer camera inspection is a video inspection of the inside of your drain or sewer line, and Hayes Plumbing provides it for homes in Oshawa and across Durham Region. A waterproof camera on a flexible push cable travels down the pipe from a cleanout or drain opening while we watch the picture on a monitor. It shows tree roots, cracks, offset joints, sagging sections where debris settles, grease and scale buildup, holes, collapsed sections and earlier repairs, along with how far each one is from the access point. A drain camera inspection replaces guesswork: it tells you whether a line needs cleaning, a spot repair or replacement, and where along the line the problem sits. That matters in Durham Region, where the Region and the homeowner are responsible for different sections of the sewer connection.

  3. You are buying an older home and want to know the condition of the sewer line before you commit.
  4. You are planning a backwater valve or finishing the basement and want to see the main drain first.
  5. Roots came back on the drain snake, or you smell sewage in the basement or yard.

Our sewer & drain camera inspection process

  1. Access the line

We put the camera in at a cleanout or drain opening. The Region of Durham requires a readily accessible 100 mm (4 inch) wye cleanout on residential sewer connections, and it is usually the best way in.

  2. Clear if needed

A camera head should not be forced into a blockage, and debris limits how far it can travel, so a line that is backed up is cleared first.

  3. Inspect

We guide the camera through the line, watch the monitor and note each finding along with its distance from the access point.

  4. Explain and plan

We show you the problem areas, explain whether the line needs cleaning, a spot repair or replacement, and give you the price in writing.

What does sewer & drain camera inspection cost in Durham Region?

A camera inspection is not listed in our 2026 cost guide because the price depends on the job: how the line is accessed, how far the camera has to travel and whether the line has to be cleared first. We give you a free in-home estimate and a written quote before work starts. If the line must be cleared, the cost guide puts drain cleaning at $150 to $400 depending on the severity and location of the blockage, and any repair the camera points to is quoted separately.

Sewer & Drain Camera Inspection FAQs

Common questions about sewer & drain camera inspection in Oshawa and Durham Region.

The inside of the pipe in real time: roots, cracks and fractures, offset or separated joints, sagging sections (bellies) where debris settles, grease and scale buildup, holes, collapsed sections and past repairs. Each finding is tied to a distance from the access point, so a repair can be planned for the right spot.

The Region of Durham owns the sanitary sewer system. For residential connections, the Region repairs the pipe from the property line to one metre (three feet) outside the house foundation; damage within that metre or inside the house is the homeowner's to repair. The Region's crews clean only from the main to the property line, and the Region does not restore lawns, driveways or landscaping on private property.

For an older home, it is worth considering. A standard home inspection is visual, and common home inspection standards say it will not identify concealed defects or report on components that are not readily accessible. A buried sewer pipe is both. A sewer scope inspection shows the line's condition before you commit, and the section nearest the house is the owner's responsibility in Durham Region.

It depends on the access point, the length of the line and whether it must be cleared first. There is no fixed price in our cost guide, so we provide a free in-home estimate and a written quote before we start.

Usually the line is cleared first. A camera head should not be pushed into a blockage, and debris restricts how far it can go. Once flow is restored, the camera can show what caused the backup.

We walk you through what the camera shows while it is on screen. If you need a copy of the footage or a written summary for a home purchase, an insurer or another contractor, mention it when you book and we will confirm what we can provide.
