Brian Hayes founded Hayes Plumbing in Oshawa in 1961, and today our licensed plumbers handle water heater repair in Bowmanville on gas and electric heaters, along with flushing, maintenance and new installations when a tank is worn out. We work throughout the town, from downtown Bowmanville along King Street to Brookhill and Port Darlington, and set out from our shop at 448 Ritson Rd. South in Oshawa, a drive of about 15 to 25 minutes. Every repair is priced in writing before work starts. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, and after hours a live operator still answers (905) 576-3043 if water is coming from the heater.
How a Repair Visit Works
- Describe the problem. When you call, tell us whether the heater is gas or electric and what you are noticing: no hot water, too little, rusty water or a metallic smell, noises, or a leak.
- Check the supply and controls. The plumber starts with the power or gas supply, then tests the controls: elements and thermostats for electric models, the gas control and burner for gas models, and the venting.
- Trace any leak. Water from the relief valve, the drain valve or a fitting can be dealt with. Water coming from the tank itself means the heater is finished.
- Compare the options. The plumber explains what failed and writes up the repair price, with a replacement price beside it when the tank is old.
- Repair and confirm. Once the part is replaced, we make sure the water is heating properly before we leave.
Is the Tank Worth Repairing?
Age is the first clue. Most tanks give 8 to 12 years of service, and the production date is coded into the serial number on the heater's label. Our hot water tank replacement article lists the signs that a tank is wearing out: rusty or discoloured hot water, rumbling or banging as it heats, temperatures that swing, rising energy bills and moisture at the base. One failed part on a younger heater is usually worth fixing; corrosion inside an older tank usually is not.
Bowmanville is on the Region of Durham's Lake Ontario drinking water system, which includes a supply plant in the town, and the Region rates the water's hardness at 125 mg/L. Over the years part of that mineral content collects at the bottom of the tank, which is part of why tanks wear out, and a yearly flush slows the process.
Water Heater Installation in Bowmanville
When the tank has to go, we take it out and install the new heater to code: connected to the gas line or electrical supply, vented to suit the model, and fitted with its own relief valve, discharge pipe and drain valve. You can choose a standard tank, a power-vent tank or a tankless unit, and each option is priced in writing.
Some homes also need an expansion tank. Water expands as it heats, and in an open system that extra volume can push back through the meter toward the main. Once the supply line gets a backflow preventer, pressure-reducing valve or some types of check valve, that path closes and the pressure stays in your pipes. We check for this whenever we work on a water heater, and size the expansion tank to the heater and your water pressure.
Bowmanville's building permits come from the Municipality of Clarington. Its permit page says a permit is normally required for "altering or adding any plumbing" and not normally required for "replacement of plumbing fixtures"; water heaters are not named either way. If the new heater will sit somewhere else or the piping will change, ask the building division (905-623-3379 ext. 2660, BuildingPermits@clarington.net, 40 Temperance Street) before you book the work. You can apply online through Service Clarington.
Gas Water Heaters and Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide forms when fuel does not burn completely, and the Province lists hot water heaters among the appliances that can produce it. Ontario's Fire Code changed on January 1, 2026: a house with a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage now needs a CO alarm on each storey, not only beside the sleeping areas. Clarington Emergency and Fire Services recommends having fuel-burning appliances and their vents inspected every year, and at certain times of year its firefighters go door to door with the Alarmed for Life program, which checks that homes have the working smoke and CO alarms the law requires. Fire Prevention's number is 905-623-5126 ext. 2808.
Who works on the gas side matters too. Ontario law reserves the maintenance of fuel-fired appliances for TSSA-registered contractors, whose gas technicians must hold TSSA certification, and TSSA's online lookup lets you check a company first. If you ever smell gas, get everyone out, then call Enbridge Gas at 1-866-763-5427 or 911 once you are outside.
What It Costs
Repair prices depend on the part and the time involved, so the plumber quotes after the diagnosis and before any work. Replacement ranges come from our hot water tank replacement article: a standard 40 to 60 gallon tank runs $1,200 to $3,500 installed, a power-vent model $1,800 to $3,800 and a tankless unit $3,000 to $6,000. Our 2026 Oshawa plumbing cost guide sets installation labour at $500 to $1,500 before the price of the heater. If you are planning ahead rather than dealing with a failure, the quote is free.
