Brooklin is the village in the north of the Town of Whitby, and Hayes Plumbing handles its plumbing emergencies 24/7, from downtown Brooklin around Grass Park to the subdivisions that surround it. Whatever the hour, a live operator is on the line at (905) 576-3043 and dispatches a licensed plumber from 448 Ritson Rd. South, our Oshawa shop. Brooklin is usually 20 to 25 minutes away by road. It's a guide, not a promised arrival time, so start the steps below as soon as you have called.
Plumbing emergencies in Brooklin homes
A new home is no guarantee against a plumbing emergency, and older homes near the village centre may still have original piping and shut-off valves left untouched for years. Phone right away for:
- A sump pump that has quit during heavy rain or snowmelt.
- A leak you can't stop from a pipe joint, a supply line or a fixture connection.
- Water showing through a ceiling or turning up in a finished basement.
- Sewage or drain water coming back into the house.
- A water heater tank that is leaking.
Before the plumber arrives
- Shut off the main beside the water meter. Brooklin has the same Region of Durham meters as the rest of Whitby, with a valve each side, and the homeowner is responsible for both.
- If the main won't close, call 905-576-9991. Even outside office hours, the Region can close the service box outside the house (also known as the curb stop) as an emergency shut-off, for a fee added to your water bill.
- A leaking water heater, or one still on with the house water off, should be turned off.
- Stay out of any water around outlets, appliances or the electrical panel.
- In a new home, also photograph the problem and report it to your builder under your new home warranty. Don't hold off stopping active water damage while you wait for a warranty callback.
Town of Whitby, Region of Durham or Hayes?
Because Brooklin belongs to the Town of Whitby, the Town issues its building and plumbing permits. Its drinking water and sanitary sewers, though, are run by the Region of Durham.
- The Region: 311 or 905-668-7711, and 905-576-9991 when a water or sewer emergency happens after hours. It deals with watermain breaks, leaks at the meter, damaged water service boxes, and any sewer backup that begins beyond your property line. Its Oshawa/Whitby Works depot is on Conlin Road in Whitby, but like all depots it isn't open to the public.
- Inside your property: the water service pipe, the part of the sewer connection that lies within a metre of the foundation, and every drain and fixture are for the homeowner to repair, and that is what our licensed plumbers do.
- Smell gas? Leave the house. If it is safe to do so without delay, leave doors and windows open behind you; then, from outside, call Enbridge Gas (1-866-763-5427) or 911.
Cost and permits in Brooklin
Brooklin emergency calls don't have a set price; the cost follows the problem, the access to it and the parts required. A written quote for the repair comes before any work begins. Three figures from our 2026 Oshawa plumbing cost guide help with planning: drain cleaning, $150 to $400; water heater installation, $500 to $1,500; and spot repairs in the leak and drain line repair category, $500 to $1,500.
Plumbing, drains and heating systems are on the Town of Whitby's list of typical projects that need a building permit, so a permanent repair with new or rerouted piping may need one; the Town's address for this is building@whitby.ca.
