Hayes Plumbing provides garbage disposal installation in Whitby and Brooklin: we mount a new disposer under the kitchen sink, tie it into the trap and the dishwasher drain, confirm it has a proper power supply and test it for leaks. Many Whitby homeowners call it a garburator, and we repair those too, from units that hum and stop to ones dripping at the sink flange. When a disposer is beyond repair we replace it. Every estimate is free and every price is in writing before work starts.
What the Region's Sewer Rules Mean for Whitby Kitchens
Whitby is home to the Region of Durham's headquarters on Rossland Road and to the Region's Sewer Use By-law office on Forbes Street, which answers questions about what may go into Regional sewers. The by-law itself (No. 55-2013) says nothing specific about household disposers, but it prohibits discharges that could obstruct a sanitary sewer and names oil and grease as prohibited.
Sewered homes in Whitby drain to the Corbett Creek Water Pollution Control Plant, which the Region's 2025 report places in the Town of Whitby and describes as treating wastewater from the Whitby, Brooklin and Oshawa service areas.
The Town of Whitby collects green bins weekly on your regular collection day. The Region's green bin list includes meat and bones, coffee grounds and filters, egg shells, napkins and paper towels. For grease, the Region asks that small amounts be absorbed and bagged into the green bin, and that large amounts go to a Regional waste management facility, rather than down the sink.
Installing a Disposer in a Whitby Kitchen
A good installation starts before the box is opened. We measure the space under the sink, because the unit hangs below the drain and needs room for service, and we compare the disposer's outlet height with the trap so the discharge tube meets it cleanly.
If a dishwasher drains through the disposer, we knock out the inlet plug, take the loose plug out of the grinding chamber, and lift the hose into a high loop or connect it through an air gap so dirty sink water cannot run back into the dishwasher.
For power, a corded disposer plugs into the outlet under the sink, and a hard-wired unit connects to the supply cable. Whitby's building permit page lists the Electrical Safety Authority among the agencies a project may involve, and ESA says anyone you hire to do electrical work in your home must be a Licensed Electrical Contractor. That applies when a new outlet, switch or circuit is needed.
Garburator Repairs, and Whitby Homes on Septic
Typical repair calls are a disposer that stops mid-grind and will not restart, which often means the overload protector has tripped, a unit that hums because something is wedged in the grinding chamber, and drips at the flange or the dishwasher inlet.
Some Whitby properties use a private septic system instead of the Regional sewer. The Town's permit page lists private sewage systems among permit projects and points applicants to the Region of Durham Health Department, and the SepticSmart! guide the Health Department links to says a garburator should only be used with a septic system designed to take one. If you are on septic, we talk that through before installing anything.
Whitby Disposal Pricing
Disposer prices vary with the model and with what we find under the sink, so we quote them in writing after a free in-home estimate. The quote covers any trap or drain changes the installation needs. When the real problem is a blocked kitchen line rather than the disposer, drain cleaning is the fix, and our 2026 cost guide lists it at $150 to $400 depending on the severity and location of the blockage.
