Hayes Plumbing provides drain repair in Whitby and Brooklin for drain and sewer pipes that have cracked, corroded, sagged or filled with roots. We work from 448 Ritson Rd. South in Oshawa and repair lines in homes across Downtown Whitby, Port Whitby, Lynde Creek, Blue Grass Meadows, Williamsburg, Taunton North, Rolling Acres and Downtown Brooklin. If a drain only needs clearing, our drain cleaning service handles it; this page is about fixing the pipe. Phone (905) 576-3043 whenever you need us; a live operator takes calls around the clock.
When a Whitby drain needs repair rather than cleaning
A drain snake or a jetter removes what is in the pipe. It cannot close a crack, lift a sagging section or reconnect a joint that has pulled apart, so a line with that kind of damage keeps clogging at the same spot. Typical warnings are a backup that returns soon after the line was cleared, gurgling from one fixture when another drains, sewer odour in the basement, and wet or extra-green ground over the buried line.
To tell the two apart, we feed a sewer camera into the line, usually at a cleanout or through an open drain, and read the damage off the monitor, along with its distance from where the camera went in. On a pipe that is cracked, heavily corroded or bellied, we hold off on high-pressure jetting until we know the pipe can take it.
Three places a drain line breaks
Where the damage is decides how the repair is done and what it costs:
- Inside the basement: the vertical stack and the branch drains from sinks, tubs and the laundry. Exposed pipe is the simplest to repair, though finished walls or ceilings may have to be opened.
- Under the basement floor: the main building drain runs below the slab, so the concrete over the damaged section has to be opened and patched afterwards.
- Under the yard: the sewer connection runs from the house toward the street. It is reached by excavating, and the digging and restoration are spelled out in the written quote.
Permits and the Region's part in Whitby
The Town of Whitby's building permit page counts plumbing, drains and heating systems as one of the usual project types needing a permit. Applications go to the Building Services Division through the Town's E-Portal or in person at 3050 Garden St., Unit 102 (email is accepted only for some permit types), and questions can be sent to building@whitby.ca. Ask for an inspection by 3 p.m. and it can be set for the following business day.
Whitby's sanitary sewers are operated by the Region of Durham rather than the Town, and wastewater from Whitby and Brooklin is treated at the Region's Corbett Creek plant, which is in Whitby. For a broken house connection, the Region fixes the length between the property line and a point one metre from the foundation. The final metre beside the house, and all the piping indoors, falls to the owner.
Drain line repair cost in Whitby
The figures in our 2026 Oshawa plumbing cost guide are a planning tool: $500 to $1,500 where a single spot is repaired, and $3,000 to $10,000 where the whole drain line is replaced. How deep and how reachable the pipe is, and its material, place a job within those ranges, and the written price comes before the work. If the camera can't get past a blockage, the line is cleared first; the cost guide's range for drain cleaning, $150 to $400, applies to that step.
One more distinction: the buried pipe that supplies your taps is the water service, not a drain, and leaks on it are handled by our water line repair and replacement service.
