Kitchen with a black sink and faucet below a double window

Garbage disposal installation in Pickering covers mounting a garburator under the kitchen sink, joining it to the trap and the dishwasher hose, connecting it to power and proving it leak-free, and Hayes Plumbing provides it across Pickering. Replacement and repair are part of the same service: we free jammed units, reseal leaking flanges and inlets, and swap out disposers that have reached the end of their life. We work with continuous-feed units, which run from a wall or sink-top switch, and batch-feed units, which only run when their cover is in place. In-home estimates are free, and the price is in writing before any work begins.

Pickering Drains Lead to Duffin Creek

The Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant sits on the north shore of Lake Ontario in Pickering. The Region of Durham operates it in partnership with York Region; it can treat 630 million litres of wastewater a day and serves Pickering, Ajax and communities in York Region.

What goes down a Pickering kitchen sink ends up there, and the Region's Sewer Use By-law (No. 55-2013) sets the rules for it. The by-law forbids discharges that obstruct sewer flow, names oil and grease among prohibited discharges, and requires restaurants and other commercial kitchens to install and maintain grease interceptors. Houses are not covered by the interceptor rule, but the underlying advice is the same for every kitchen: no fat, oil or grease down the sink.

Disposer and Green Bin: Using Both in Pickering

In Pickering, curbside green bin collection is a Region of Durham service, and bins go to the curb every week. Food scraps, bones, nuts, tea bags, napkins and food-soiled cardboard are all accepted, and the Region's grease advice is to let it cool or soak it up, then bin it.

We suggest keeping the disposer for plate scrapings and letting the green bin take the rest. When you run the unit, use a moderate flow of cold water and let it keep running for a few seconds after grinding stops; the manufacturer advises against hot water while grinding.

What a Proper Disposer Installation Includes

We start by checking the sink drain opening, the space below it and how the disposer's outlet will meet the existing trap. Where a dishwasher drains into the disposer, the inlet's knockout plug has to come out and be retrieved from the grinding chamber; a plug left in place stops the dishwasher from draining.

The dishwasher hose is then routed with a high loop or through an air gap so sink water cannot siphon back into the dishwasher. Power comes from an outlet under the sink or a hard-wired connection, and new outlets and circuits are electrical work for a Licensed Electrical Contractor. Before we leave, we test for leaks at the sink flange, the mounting, the tailpipe and the dishwasher inlet.

Pricing for Pickering Disposer Work

A disposer job is quoted once we have seen the sink, the drain and the power supply, and the in-home estimate costs nothing. The written price covers the installation and any trap or drain changes. If a slow drain is caused by a clog past the disposer, drain cleaning is a separate item that our 2026 cost guide places at $150 to $400.

Garbage Disposal Installation & Repair in Pickering: FAQs

Common questions from Pickering homeowners.

The sanitary sewers in Pickering are run by the Region of Durham, so the Region's Sewer Use By-law applies. It has no specific rule on household disposers but prohibits anything that could obstruct a sewer, including oil and grease.

Turn the switch off first. On many disposers the overload protector is a red button on the bottom of the unit; if it has dropped down, press it gently, and if it will not stay in, wait about ten minutes and try again. If it keeps tripping, call us.

Yes. We remove the knockout plug from the disposer's dishwasher inlet, clamp the drain hose on, route it with a high loop or air gap and run a drain cycle to check for leaks.

Yes. A batch-feed unit has its switch in the cover, so it only runs when the cover is in place, while a continuous-feed unit runs from a wall or sink-top switch. Neither type changes the drain or dishwasher connection underneath.
