What is gas line installation & repair?

Gas line installation is the work of running new natural gas piping from your meter to an appliance, and gas line repair fixes piping that is leaking, damaged or no longer safe. Hayes Plumbing installs and repairs natural gas lines for homes in Oshawa and across Durham Region, including lines for BBQs, gas stoves and ranges, dryers, fireplaces, water heaters and outdoor heaters. In Ontario this work is regulated by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA): it must be done by a TSSA-registered contractor using TSSA-certified gas technicians. Enbridge Gas is the natural gas utility in Durham Region, and under its conditions of service the building piping and appliances beyond the point where gas is delivered are the property owner's responsibility. Every job starts with a free in-home estimate and a written quote.

Our gas line installation & repair process

  1. Plan the run

We look at the meter, what is already connected and the route to each new appliance, then give you the price in writing.

  2. Locates first

Any buried run to a patio or BBQ needs public utility locates through Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) at least 5 business days before digging, plus a private locate for existing private lines.

  3. Install

The new piping is run, supported and connected to each appliance to the natural gas installation code adopted in Ontario.

  4. Test and light

New piping is pressure tested and checked for leaks before the gas is turned on, then each appliance is lit and checked.

What does gas line installation & repair cost in Durham Region?

Gas line work is not listed in our 2026 cost guide because every job is different. The price depends on the distance from the meter, how many appliances the line feeds, whether the route runs through finished walls and ceilings or underground to a patio, and whether Enbridge Gas has to alter the meter or service, which Enbridge charges to the customer when the change is made at the customer's request. We provide a free in-home estimate and a written quote before any work starts.

Gas Line Installation & Repair FAQs

Common questions about gas line installation & repair in Oshawa and Durham Region.

A contractor registered with the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), using gas technicians who hold TSSA certificates under Ontario Regulation 215/01, such as the Gas Technician 1, 2 or 3 certificates. Whatever you call the trade, gas fitter or gas technician, you can check a company's registration with TSSA's online lookup of authorized fuels contractors before you hire.

Leave the building right away, leaving doors and windows open behind you if you can do so without delay, and call the Enbridge Gas emergency line at 1-866-763-5427 or 911 once you are safely away. Do not use phones, light switches or electronics near the smell, do not start a vehicle nearby and do not search for the leak yourself. Once the area has been made safe, the damaged house piping can be repaired.

There is no single price. A short line to a range near the meter is a much smaller job than a long buried run to a backyard BBQ, and any meter or service change Enbridge Gas makes at your request is billed by Enbridge. We quote every natural gas line installation in writing after a free in-home estimate.

Gas piping is regulated through TSSA under Ontario's gaseous fuels regulation, which adopts the CSA B149.1 natural gas and propane installation code. Municipal building permits depend on the project: the City of Oshawa and the City of Pickering list gas fireplaces among work that does not need a building permit, while the Town of Whitby lists new fireplaces among projects that do. Check with your municipal building department for your project.

No. Running gas piping to a BBQ is regulated gas work in Ontario and needs a TSSA-registered contractor and certified technician. Once it is in, remember that a buried BBQ line is private: Ontario Dig Authority lists gas lines to BBQs and pool heaters as private infrastructure that public locates do not mark, so a private locate is needed before anyone digs near it.

No. Enbridge Gas notes that carbon monoxide alarms detect carbon monoxide, not natural gas. You still need them: Ontario requires a working CO alarm adjacent to each sleeping area in homes with a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage.
