Hayes Plumbing finds and repairs plumbing leaks in homes across Whitby, from Blue Grass Meadows to Taunton North and Brooklin, working from our shop at 448 Ritson Rd. South in Oshawa. A leak can be as small as a weeping valve under a sink or as hidden as a pinhole in a copper line behind the drywall. Our licensed plumbers trace each one to the pipe, fitting or fixture causing it instead of patching the stain it left, and when a copper system keeps springing pinholes we explain when repiping makes more sense than another spot repair.
Signs of a Hidden Leak
A leak inside a wall or under a floor usually shows up as something else first. Call a plumber if you notice any of these:
- Your water bill jumps with no change in how you use water.
- A stain or bubbling paint appears on a ceiling or wall.
- A closet or cabinet starts to smell musty.
- You hear water running when every tap and appliance is off.
Check Your Water Meter First
The Region of Durham's leak detection guide describes a simple check using your water meter. Make sure no water is being used, watch the meter for a minute or more, and look at the flow indicator (the red triangle or dial). If it keeps spinning, you may have a leak. The Region adds that most leaks are silent and will not necessarily leave water on the floor.
In hot, humid weather, condensation can form on the cold supply line and drip near the meter. The Region points out that this is easy to mistake for a meter leak, so wipe the pipe dry and check again before booking a repair.
How We Track Down and Repair a Leak
- Find the source. We trace the leak back to the fixture, valve, fitting or pipe that is causing it, not just the spot where the water shows.
- Explain the options. A single failure usually means one repair. For copper that is failing in several places, we also price a repipe, and you get both in writing.
- Repair and test. Cartridges, valves, fittings and pipe sections are replaced, and the repaired line is pressure tested.
- Check nearby connections. We look at the fittings and supply lines close to the leak and tell you about anything that is near failing.
Pinhole Leaks in Copper Pipe
A pinhole leak is a tiny hole in a copper water line, and inside a wall or ceiling it can drip for some time before a stain appears. One pinhole can be fixed by cutting out the damaged section and replacing it. When the same system keeps producing pinholes, though, the pipe is usually failing throughout, and repiping saves opening the same walls and ceilings over and over.
Meter and Water Service Leaks: Who Repairs What
In Whitby, the Region of Durham supplies the water. If the leak is at the water meter or its fittings, the Region repairs it, so call its Works Department depot. Leaks anywhere else in the house, including the shut-off valves on either side of the meter, are the homeowner's responsibility, and that is the work we do.
Outside, responsibility for the water service is split at the property line. The Region repairs residential water service connections within the public right of way, up to the property line, and the section on your property is yours to repair. The Region also encourages homeowners to ask their home insurance or warranty provider whether repairs to water and sewer service connections are covered.
