Toilet beside a window in a renovated bathroom

Hayes Plumbing looks after toilet installation in Courtice and the repairs that keep an existing toilet going. Courtice sits at the west end of the Municipality of Clarington, beside Oshawa, so our licensed plumbers reach most of it, from Courtice Main Street (Highway 2) to Southwest and Southeast Courtice, in about 10 to 15 minutes from 448 Ritson Rd. South. Our plumbers repair toilets that run between flushes, leak at the base, rock or flush weakly. We also supply and install standard and comfort-height toilets, bidets and bidet seats, or install a toilet you provide. You see the written price before we start.

Toilet Repairs in Courtice

Most toilet trouble comes from one part that has worn out or slipped out of adjustment:

  • A toilet that runs or refills on its own is usually letting water past a worn flapper, or its fill valve no longer shuts off cleanly. We replace the failed part and set the tank level so water stops spilling into the overflow tube.
  • If the toilet rocks, or water collects around its foot after flushing, the wax ring sealing it to the drain has broken. We take the toilet up, fix or replace a broken flange, and reset it on a new ring.
  • A weak flush or frequent clogs can come from a low tank level, a partly blocked trap or a problem further down the drain, and when the clog sits past the toilet, in the branch or main drain, we clear it as a drain cleaning job.
  • A drip at the wall usually traces back to the supply line or the shut-off valve, and we replace whichever one is leaking.
  • Porcelain that has cracked, in the tank or the bowl, is not something we patch, so the toilet gets replaced.

A Leak Check You Can Do Today

The Region of Durham says "a leaking toilet could cost you hundreds of dollars each year", and its leak brochure adds that most leaks make no sound. To check yours, colour the tank water with food dye, or use one of the dye test strips you can order free from the Region's Works Department, then wait 15 to 30 minutes without flushing. If colour shows up in the bowl, the toilet is leaking, usually past a worn flapper. The Region also says chemical tank cleaners can cause a flapper to fail early, so they are best avoided.

Courtice and Clarington's Water-Saving Test Homes

Courtice has been part of a regional water efficiency trial. Under Priority Green Clarington, six new homes were built in Bowmanville and Courtice in 2014 with features that went beyond what the Ontario Building Code required, including three-litre toilets and greywater systems that reuse shower water for flushing. The Region compared their water use with the average detached home in Durham and found they used 22, 27 and 29 per cent less in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Those homes combined several features, so the savings are not from the toilets alone.

Few homeowners will add a greywater system, but swapping an old high-consumption toilet for a WaterSense labelled one is an ordinary replacement job. WaterSense is the label the Region's water efficiency page recommends looking for, given to toilets that are performance tested and certified as water efficient.

What Belongs in a Courtice Toilet

In Courtice, a home on municipal sewers drains into the sanitary sewer system that the Region of Durham operates, not the Municipality of Clarington. The Region's sanitary sewers are designed only for toilet paper, human waste and wastewater. Put wipes in the garbage even if the label says flushable, and do the same with hygiene products and cotton balls; the Region warns they can clog sewers and cause flooding in homes.

Permits for Toilet Work in Courtice

Courtice borders Oshawa, but its building permits come from the Municipality of Clarington. Clarington does not normally require a permit for the "Replacement of plumbing fixtures", which covers a toilet changed where it already sits. Relocating a toilet or adding a washroom is another matter, because Clarington normally requires a permit for "Altering or adding any plumbing". Its Building Division answers questions at 905-623-3379 ext. 2660 or BuildingPermits@clarington.net. Once a permit is issued, inspections are requested on 905-623-7876, and the message has to arrive before 3 p.m. on the business day before the inspection.

Toilet Repair and Installation Prices

Toilets are not among the items in our 2026 Oshawa plumbing cost guide, so Courtice toilet work is priced job by job. A repair is quoted once the plumber has found the failed part. An installation quote covers removing the old toilet, any flange or valve work, and setting the new toilet and testing it, with the toilet shown as its own line when it comes from us. Quotes are free, and the price is in writing before we start.

Toilet Installation in Courtice: FAQs

Common questions from Courtice homeowners.

Yes. Water running into the bowl goes straight down the drain and onto your water and sewer bill, and the usual cause, a worn flapper, costs little to replace. A running toilet on its own is rarely a reason to buy a new one.

Usually not, if the new toilet goes where the old one was. Clarington does not normally require a permit to replace plumbing fixtures. Putting a toilet in a new location, or adding another, is a plumbing alteration, and Clarington normally requires a permit for that.

Yes. Comfort-height, or chair-height, toilets sit roughly two inches taller than standard toilets and connect to the same floor flange, so they suit anyone who finds a low seat hard to get up from.

Usually 10 to 15 minutes by road from 448 Ritson Rd. South in Oshawa. We give drive times, not arrival promises. If a toilet is overflowing after hours, call (905) 576-3043, where a live operator answers 24/7.
