From a toilet that will not stop running to a full replacement, Hayes Plumbing handles toilet repair and installation in Whitby and Brooklin from our shop at 448 Ritson Rd. South in Oshawa. We fix toilets that run, leak at the base, rock on the floor or flush weakly, and we supply and install regular and comfort-height toilets, or install one you have bought. When we replace a toilet, we inspect the flange, set the new toilet on a fresh wax ring, connect a new supply line, test it and take the old one away.
Check Your Toilet for Leaks
A running toilet is easy to ignore, but the Region of Durham says toilet leaks are the most common cause of high water and sanitary sewer bills. Most of those leaks come from a worn flapper, a tank water level set too high, or a handle that does not return after the flush.
You can check the flapper yourself with the Region's dye test: take the lid off the tank, add five drops of food colouring, and look in the bowl after about 10 minutes. Colour in the bowl means the flapper is leaking. While the lid is off, make sure the water sits about one centimetre below the top of the overflow pipe and that the handle springs back after each flush.
The Region's guide puts the average life of a flapper at about five years and warns that chlorine-based toilet cleaners can damage the plastic and rubber parts inside the tank. A flapper, fill valve or handle is an inexpensive repair. A cracked tank or bowl, or a toilet that needs one repair after another, is usually better replaced.
Toilet Repairs We Make
Many toilet problems can be fixed without replacing the toilet:
- Running toilets: we replace the flapper, fill valve, chain or handle and reset the water level so the tank stops refilling on its own.
- Leaking at the base or rocking: a toilet that moves on the floor breaks its wax seal, so we lift it, inspect the flange, repair the flange if it is cracked or corroded, and reset the toilet on a new wax ring.
- Weak or double flushing: we check the flapper, the water level and the fill valve, and clear any partial blockage in the trap or drain.
- Supply and valve leaks: we replace dripping supply lines and seized shut-off valves behind the toilet.
- Bidets: we also install bidets and bidet seats.
Installing a New Toilet in Your Whitby Home
- Choose the toilet. We help you pick the height, the rough-in (the distance from the wall to the centre of the drain) and the brand, or we install the toilet you supply.
- Remove the old toilet. We shut off the water, empty the tank and bowl, disconnect the supply and lift the toilet off the flange.
- Check the flange. A cracked, corroded or low flange is repaired before the new toilet goes in, because a new toilet on a bad flange will leak at the base.
- Set, connect and test. The toilet is set on a new wax ring, levelled and bolted down evenly, connected with a new supply line, and flushed several times to check the fill, the flush and every connection. Then we haul the old toilet away.
