Hayes Plumbing covers plumbing emergencies 24/7 in Port Perry and throughout the Township of Scugog: downtown Port Perry on Queen Street by Lake Scugog, Scugog Island, Prince Albert, Seagrave, Caesarea and Blackstock. The live operator who answers (905) 576-3043 at any hour sends a licensed plumber from the Hayes shop, 448 Ritson Rd. South in Oshawa; our seven service vehicles are all fully stocked, and one of them makes the trip. Because the drive usually takes 35 to 45 minutes, being able to stop the water yourself matters even more here than it does closer to Oshawa.
Town water, private wells and septic in Scugog
In Port Perry itself, homes are on Region of Durham services. The Region draws the town's water from municipal groundwater wells and treats its wastewater at the Nonquon Water Pollution Control Plant in Port Perry, which serves about 9,900 residents.
Beyond the serviced area, the Region notes that many rural residents have private wells and septic systems, maintained by the owner. Septic system permits in the Township of Scugog come from the Durham Region Health Department. Your first move in an emergency depends on which you have: town services, or a well and septic system.
Before the plumber arrives
- Town water: the main shut-off is beside the water meter, and both valves on a Region of Durham meter, one either side, are the homeowner's responsibility. Close it. Should neither valve budge, the Region can close the outdoor service box (curb stop); after hours, call 905-576-9991. The Region charges a fee for this on your water bill.
- Private well: turn the well pump off at its breaker so it stops pushing water into the house, then close the main valve if you can get to it safely.
- Septic system with drains backing up: stop running water, flushing toilets and doing laundry in the washer.
- If the water heater is leaking, or the supply is off, turn the heater off.
- Keep away from water near outlets and the electrical panel, and take photos of the damage for your insurer.
Who to call in Port Perry and Scugog
- Region of Durham Works, where you are on Region services: 311 or 905-668-7711, or 905-576-9991 for after-hours water and sewer emergencies. Call about watermain breaks, leaks at the water meter, broken water service boxes, and sewer backups caused by a blockage outside your property. The Region has a Scugog depot on Goodwood Road in Port Perry, but depots aren't open to the public.
- Durham Health Connection Line, 905-668-2020, if you think your well water is unsafe, for example after a flood. Meanwhile, the Region's advice is to stop using the well water and use bottled water. Bacteria testing is free, and sample bottles are at the Health Department's north office, 181 Perry St., Port Perry.
- Enbridge Gas (1-866-763-5427) or 911 for any smell of natural gas, called from outside once you have left the building.
- Hayes Plumbing, (905) 576-3043, for burst or frozen pipes, backed-up drains, leaking water heaters, failed sump pumps and the rest of the plumbing inside the home.
