A bathroom renovation can be quite a stressful project, but with some helpful tips, you can definitely keep it from turning into a big ball of disaster. Bathrooms are among the most difficult renovation project to endure mainly because of how inconvenient it is when your bathroom is “out of order”. This is especially so if it’s the only bathroom in your home.
Before you have a bathroom renovation, we do hope you have already thought of where you’ll be taking your shower and doing everything else you do in your bathroom. If you have a second bathroom, then you’re lucky. If not, you might want to ask your contractor if a temporary shower could be installed in the basement. If that’s not a possibility, we hope you have family who live nearby or at least you have a really good relationship with your neighbours.
Once that’s all settled, you can now move on to other matters. First of all, you will have to remove everything that’s in your bathroom including those that are inside the cabinets, on the countertops, and more. If those items are going to be reinstated in the bathroom once it’s done, put them in a box or two and remember to mark them so you won’t forget where they are. Take this opportunity to do some purging. Most bathroom essentials have a shelf life. Throw away those that are past their expiry dates as they not only add to the clutter, but it’s also possible that they’re no longer safe to use.
Also remove all the items from both sides of your bathroom walls, including picture frames, paintings, clocks, and other decorations. There will constant cutting and hammering in the area and the vibrations they make can cause items to fall.
All the floors that lead from the doors to the bathroom to be remodelled should be covered with drop cloths. It is also better to remove any area rugs near the remodelling area to avoid accidental tripping and to keep them from collecting dust. You might want to cover all the furniture in the surrounding rooms, too.
Other things that you need to take care of before the renovation starts include informing your neighbours about it and ask for their understanding because there will be noise and possible traffic. If you live in a townhouse or a condo, inform your association too so there will be no surprises.
